Parents Complain That Williams Lake British Columbia High School Anti-Homophobia Week Actually Promotes “Gayness”, Succeed In Cancelling Events And Proving Why Williams Lake Ranked As Second Worse City In Canada

Students at Columneetza Secondary School in Williams Lake, British Columbia plan to dress up as the opposite sex Friday, protesting a decision by administrators to cancel some of the scheduled anti-homophobia events, including an anti-homophobia presentation organized by the local chapter of the Gay Straight Alliance that was to have taken place at an assembly today, Tuesday. That, along with a Gender Bender day, was cancelled after some parents complained late last week. Dian Wright, the superintendent of the Cariboo-Chilcotin School District, said that the parents “felt that it was promoting the gay lifestyle, rather than promoting anti-homophobia.” However, the rather fierce Lexi Saffell, president of the Williams Lake Gay Straight Alliance says she will risk suspension, and intends to participate in the Gender Bender day Friday, saying “I don’t think it is fair at all for the school district to cancel (the day). We’re not doing anything wrong as long as we dress in an appropriate manner for school.” Saffell, who, along with another student, were to lead an assembly Monday discussing their experiences with homophobia, and have showed a video discussing discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered individuals. That too, was cancelled. Saffell, astutely underling the thick irony, said “I’m really disappointed – we don’t get to make as much of a difference as I was hoping. The original reason we heard (for the cancellation) was that we were promoting gayness. I feel like what was behind (parent complaints) was homophobia.”
I'm "rather fierce", eh? Huh.
